the poetry corner

ok, i'm a sentimental git, so here's some poetry i find generally nice... the zen is included under poetry, because that's pretty much what it is. also there is so much linkage with the haiku that it doesn't separate nicely... more as i find it.

  • poems by me
i've recently taken to writing what could be loosely called poetry. there is not much so far, and most of what is there seems pretty pretentious to me... however, i've found it hard to find people who agree with this assessment.
  • haiku by bashou
bashou is probably the best known of the proponents of this japanese short poetry form, and with good reason. he manages to evoke powerful and clear images in a delicate 17 syllables - images that many fail to evoke in an epic.
  • heraclitus by callimachus and william cory
the original poem by heraclitus is a classic eulogy on the death of friend. william cory manages to capture the soul of the poem with his equally poetic translation.
  • haiku error messages
here the haiku form is used to poke fun at those 'helpful' error messages many windows and internet users are plagued by.
  • selected catullus
catullus is one of my favourite poets with his mixture of comedy, romance and technical brilliance. these are a selection of what i think are his best short poems.
  • zen graffiti
short blasts of illumination in the tradition of the zen retort.
  • short zen koan
an example of the seeming contradiction in much of zen teaching, that stem from false duality and category thinking.
  • magic - NiKiTa
NiKiTa is a friend of mine in .oz - there is more poetry on her site, but i think this is the best of it... have a poke around.
