i suppose the easiest way to do this is via a semi scientific fake interview, so here goes... this interview took place on the 23rd of june 1999 (last updated 16th december) in the comfort of my own mind...

q. what's your name?
a. on the net i like to be known as 'the auroran sunset', in the less real world i'm generally called fennel.

q. is fennel your whole name?
a. no... it is fennel zaaron kingfisher teacher aurora.

q. poor you... you're parent must have been really screwed up.
a. not at all, i love my names.. if i didn't i'd have changed them long ago as i did with my surname.

q. didn't family mind?
a. i've always been told it's my name, do with it what i will.

q. ok enough about your name... what about the rest of the irritatingly boring stats that people like?
a. right... i'm male, 19, just over 6', about 64kg.

q. some people seem to think your homosexual... do you have any comment?
a. yeah... don't be silly, i've got good taste... though why it'd bother them is beyond me.

q. do you have a girlfriend?
a. no.

q. where do you come from?
a. pluto... the irish quarter.

q. and you expect me to believe that?
a. what you believe is your business... nationality is something i most definitely don't take seriously.

q. where do you live?
a. oxford.

q. what do you look like?
a. according to the st.anne's jcr, i am both the worst dressed and the second best dressed guy in college. i attribute this to blatant cheating on the part of certain 2nd years... in keeping with my view that the world should all be as pretty and colourful as the acropolis and other temple/churches were before the puritans, i dress in bright colours and generally pretty clothes. my hair is blue with a pink front, and is currently in the process of being grown v. long. i wear a tie most of the time.

q. what's your current occupation?
a. i'm just about to start first year at st.anne's college(oxford) again, but this time on a new course: computation... i also work for the family software firm doing asp programming in the holidays.

q. what happened to the first first year?
a. i was doing engineering and hated it.

q. do you have hobbies?
a. yes.

q. that wasn't very helpful... what else do you do?
a. as tom lehrer says: if you ask a silly question, you get a silly answer...
i've also been elected secretary of the guild of assassin and i do loads of sports on a when i can basis: running, tennis, badminton, cricket and table tennis. i'm also playing a lot of chess online at chessed.com, where i've got a rating of about 1720 elo (i'm 'dawnsunset').

q. hmm, that's quite a bit... i noticed there was nothing about music (i would being you)... does that mean you don't listen to music?
a. far from it: i pretty much permanently have music on, even while i sleep... i find it helps to have non-random noises drowning out the random noise so that i can more easily filter out the lot... it helps concentration.

q. what sort of music do you like?
a. my main thing is definitely motown, but i listen to loads of other stuff.

q. how about films?
a. my favourite type of film is the kung fu film... not hollywood or jackie chan type films (although i like his stuff), but the really stylized hong kong stuff... for example 'the buddhist fist'... the next genre i go for is the satire or black comedy, for example 'bulworth', grosse pointe blank  or 'trainspotting'...
i'm also happy to watch a good comedy or just a plain pretty film, like 'the eel'. just for the record: i didn't like the first three star wars films.

q. what do you read?
a. loads of scifi, particularly social scifi, like heinlein or van vogt... historical novels like colleen mccullough or james clavell... books on science, psychology or economics... books on japanese history.... many more.

q. what do you do on your computer, apart from talking gibberish to the natives?
a. my main interest is web page design... i work programming asp, javascript and html... at the moment mostly database stuff... i also play games like civ or alpha centuri, although that happens less often nowadays.

q. what do you eat?
a. food.

q. i suppose you think that's funny... come what sort of food?
a. the edible kind.

q. fennel, please.
a. oh, ok... i tend to eat loads of pasta/noodles... i love chocolate, the higher the percentage the better. for breakfast i invariably eat alpen (50% sugar can't be bad)... scrambled egg is another favourite... once yeast based (or whatever they come up with) alternates to meat become good enough i'll go veggie.
i also loved the food while i was in japan... i particular ramen, yakitori, tempura and sashimi... they also have a gorgeous desert made with green tea ice-cream and crushed ice covered with sweet red beans.

q. what about drink?
a. i mostly drink water and orange juice... dr pepper is also very nice. in the alcohol department, spirits is the name of the game, with emphasis on liqueurs like bailey's or curacao bleu.

q. what's your favourite colour?
a. blue... electric blue being the best variety.

q. what's the best way to get into your bad books?
a. smoke... just as shitting in the street is no longer accepted behaviour, i expect and will campaign for smoking to become unheard of in civilized society.

q. what's the best way to get into your good books?
a. be a friendly, non aggressive and interesting person who talks to me.

q. do you have any final messages?
a. if (intelligent) {wear sunscreen} else {don't breed}
