this is a parallel to my dvd collection page, and also my music collector page.

late on in my first year at university, when i was nineteen, it became apparent that i couldn't follow much of the conversation around me because i've hadn't seen most of the films people were talking about. at that point i'd probably seen about ten film total at a cinema, and most of those when i was too young to remember. as many will know i have an insatiable need to know everything. not one to be defeated by a slow start, i joined my local cinema's rolls and went to 'work', seeing vast numbers of films.

in the intervening three or so years i've probably seen close to a hundred films a year at cinemas. plus various videos and films on tv... i'm now not so lost in conversation, in fact i got to the stage of knowing a bit too much - annoyingly this seems to happen every time i get interested in something. *shrug*.

through all this watching, i've become a bit of a snob about what films i will and won't see - i've got to be pretty good at picking the ones i will and won't like.... the disadvantage of this is that the original purpose, to know enough to be able to follow local nattering, has been rather lost, as many (but not all) of the popular films are ones i wouldn't want to see.

can't have everything; can't spend my whole life trying to fit the crowd. i think my film watching will gradually slow down, but i'll probably be an avid watcher for some time to come. i find watching a film is a good way to switch my mind away from work for a little bit, and to this purpose i'm building a little collection of dvds - well it will be when i'm 'done'.

finally we reach the point of this page, which is to list those dvds my collection lacks, and would be happy to gain. in parallel with this i intend two other pages: one to list the collection, and one to list films i see at cinemas (at some point i'll go through film release lists and backdate the list).

along with these i hope to link in reviews, recommendations, and perhaps later little pieces on actors/actresses/directors that i enjoy. another possibility is an 'avoid with a bargepole' section, this would obviously start with the whole output of the disney corporation (well the original fantasia might get exempted ;-)) and a.i. (the only film i've ever been tempted to walk out of, after about five minutes; i regret not doing so).

other than that, things will. grow and extend, or wither and die, as i see fit. hope you enjoy the show. :-)
