amusing kanji/japanese

these are short to medium length pieces looking at funny or interesting literal meanings of the kanji [symbols used to write japanese and chinese] that make up various japanese words. there are also some bad puns in japanese, or mixed japanese and english, that i made up. i try to keep these articles interesting by putting in lots of related bits of trivia about the japanese and the kanjis. the articles are all taken from my diary/blog.

the list below is in reverse date order. the more recent items will probably be better as i am gradually learning more japanese and honing the style. there are instructions for those that can't get their computer to display the japanese in the faq. if you hover over any japanese script, the readings should appear in english script.

i should note that although i am learning japanese and these articles are about elements of the japanese language and the japanese writing system, the articles require no prior knowledge of either japanese or kanji. much of the japanese and kanji in these articles is obscure and unlikely to be of direct use to a japanese learner, it may however give them the interest to study that bit more seriously.
