prettiness all around

the world is full of pretty and interesting things: often so many that it's hard to keep up. this section is a reflection of that prettiness. mostly it is photos taken by me, but there are also some images from other sources. currently far too much remains without comments - this is another of my projects to come when work quiets down.

    All Nippon Airways have a number of planes with pretty paint jobs. This one is decked out with characters from the Pikachu cartoons. Photos taken while watching planes come in and out of Kagoshima Airport on 11th April 2004.

    photos from around osaka on the 8th and 9th of april. in the evening we arrived in central osaka [osaka actually has at least three 'centres'], esconsed ourselves in the dai-ichi hotel [not related to the university we were at], and headed out for all you can eat barbequed beef.

    osaka sealife prison had the largest single tank in world when it was created [that honour is currently held by a newer sealife prison in okinawa, also part of japan]. the tank is 34 metres long, 9 metres high and holds 5400 tons of water. it is the centrepiece of a rather impressive prison, full of a wide variety of sharks (including a whale shark) and rays. around the prison are a wide variety o [...]

    coming back from norway by plane, i tried to take photos of the fairyland clouds out the window. i'm not entirely happy, but i think i'd need to hire a plane to do better.

    i went to norway with one of my sisters to go walking up on the plateau east of bergen. it was absolutely stunning, and i definitely hope to return someday.

    me modeling some of my clothes in our backgarden. it was too sunny: the photos are very washed out.. also i seem to look like a jackboot in these photos, which is rather unfortunate.

  • oxford flooded - easter 1998
    oxford has a number of flood plains around it, which are sometimes not controlled properly - or maybe people are building too close and so reducing the leeway - easter 1998 saw the worse flood in about half a century, maybe more. these are taken from a few hundred metres away from my then home.

  • fairford airshow - summer 1997
    when i was young, i went to a fair few airshows. fairford is probably the biggest of those held annually in the uk - ticket prices are also highly unreasonable, thus this was the last year we went there.

  • ccf trip to belgium - summer 1997
    as part of my time at st.edward's school, i was made to waste a year of monday afternoons marching up and down in the "combined cadet forces". we also had a couple of weekends of hell, one of which involved a coach trip to belgium, and parading at some rememberance day thing. we also visited some impressive fields of graves.

    thrust ssc was the first 'car' to break the speed of sound. it appeared at the london motor show before the attempt, along with the driver [andy green] and the owner/creator [richard noble]. i took some pictures.

    another family visit to the dordogne. this time my brother noticed a sleeping bat on the wall of our gite. we also went to see the tour de france.

    for a few years family went on holiday to the same gite in the dordogne. these are pictures from a very nearby castle, and its museum. the bridge is one we crossed daily to go get bread.

    in my family there is a tradition of making amusing birthday cakes based on the interests of the birthday boy or girl. this one is based on the "squaws of the hyponenus" joke.

    as i kid i got taken along to kew quite a few times, as my dad walked and talked with various interesting people. these are from one of those trips - inside one of the greenhouses, and one of a peacock.

    lots of photos from the toyota in house inovation design competition exhibition at the science museum; the bike that boardman blew time trial records away on; some waxworks at madame tusauds; an interesting car in a london street; some animals at london zoo: a vulture, a panda, a gorilla, a green mamba, a penguin, a camel and a tiger.

    i went out to australia for a month and saw some interesting bits... some animals at perth zoo, me talking to some huge magpies, the enormous size of sheep transporters, and a quoka on rock nest island.
